The Canadian Society for Spirituality and Social Work (CSSSW) began to take shape in July 2000 at the IASSW/IFSW conference in Montreal. Barbara Swartzentruber (Renison College), following up on a conversation with Dr. Ed Canda (University of Kansas), sought out Brian Ouellette (St. Thomas University), John Graham (University of Calgary) and John Coates (St. Thomas University) to discuss an area of shared interest and commitment – spirituality and social work. Together they formed a network and agreed to plan a conference and, aided by a grant from SSHRC and the cooperation of the Faculty of Social Work at UofT and the CASSW, the First Canadian Conference on Spirituality and Social Work took place at the University of Toronto in May, 2002. The Canadian Network for Spirituality and Social Work that was formed in 2001 formally became the Canadian Society for Spirituality and Social Work in 2005.
Since 2001 the CSSSW has grown as it has organized four national Canadian Conferences, and three conference co-sponsored with the Society for Spirituality and Social Work ( USA): The First North American Conference on Spirituality and Social Work (May 2006 at Renison College, University of Waterloo), the Second North American Conference on Spirituality and Social Work, (June 2007 in Chicago), and The Third North American Conference on Spirituality and Social Work (June 19-21, 2008, at St. Thomas Universtiy, Fredericton, New Brunswick. At present, the CSSSW provides this website, a listserve for members wishing to receive e-mail updates about conferences and educational events across Canada, and organizes annual conferences.
Members of the CSSSW, Drs. Diana Coholic, John Graham and John Coates, were awarded an SSHRC Strategic Cluster Research Grant in 2006 to further develop a network of Canadian and international scholars, practitioners and organizations to further research in the area of Spirituality and Social Work. Information about the research cluster is available on this website (research)
