History is the
study of how we interpret the past - a way of understanding the political
systems, economies and social structures of our own culture as well
as others. It can help you to place what's happening around you today
in perspective, to appreciate the origins of our laws and social institutions,
to trace the roots of contemporary problems. Since the study of history
involves researching evidence that is, for the most part, written, it
can help you develop your research, reading, writing and analytical
skills. The history department at St. Thomas offers majors and honours
programmes with specific strengths in global history and the histories
of western Europe, Asia, Latin America, Africa, Canada and the United
States.
