Dr. O’Brien called the special meeting to order.

1. SRCC - History Recommendations.

Mover and seconder for every motion: Myers:Bittermann.
Motion: The Department meet with the AVP to facilitate a significant revision of curriculum.
CARRIED.
Motion: Every faculty member be given the opportunity to teach an honours level course in his or her speciality at least every second year.
DEFEATED.
Motion: The History department complement be increased by one full time position.
WITHDRAWN.
Motion: Financial provision be made for tutorial assistants in introductory level courses.
DEFEATED.
2. SRCC - Criminology and Criminal Justice Recommendations
Mover and seconder for each motion:
Myers:Sauvageau.
Motion: The University undertake a strategic planning exercise with the Department to determine its mission. Special attention should be paid to the appropriate balance between the number of students registered and the level of resources required to meet that demand.
WITHDRAWN.
Motion: The Department consider the reduction of required courses.
CARRIED.
Motion: The Department explore ways to increase the scope of optional courses.
CARRIED.
Motion: The Department investigate alternatives to the present form of delivery for 1000 level courses.
CARRIED.
Motion: The Department and University assess the costs and benefits of offering courses in French.
CARRIED.
Motion: The Department explore alternatives to its current over-reliance on the use of part-time staff.
CARRIED.
Motion: The Department encourage those part-time instructors who are eligible to apply for established status to do so.
CARRIED.
Motion: The Department reduce its reliance on overload teaching by full time staff.
CARRIED.
Motion: The Department develop policies for the office hours of part time instructors to ensure their availability to students.
CARRIED.
Motion: The University policy on class size maximums be clarified and enforced in Criminology courses.
CARRIED.
Motion: The Department explore options for alternative timetabling of courses.
CARRIED.
Motion: The Department consider dropping the Certificate in Criminology and Criminal Justice.
CARRIED.
Motion: The Department consider changes to its specialized training offerings.
WITHDRAWN.
Motion: The Department work more closely with the Admissions office to assure that students at NBCC-Miramichi are better informed about the requirements of the BAACJ degree and the Department’s expectations of students enrolled in the program.
CARRIED.
Motion: The University explore the option of dropping the BAACJ program.
WITHDRAWN.
Motion: The Department consider the introduction of an Honours programme.
CARRIED.
Motion: The Department diversify its research interests and activities in future appointments.
CARRIED.
Motion: The Department be given more autonomy over governance and management issues.
WITHDRAWN.
Motion: The Department hold an off-campus retreat prior to the beginning of each academic year.
CARRIED.
Motion: The Department maintain its commitment to regularly scheduled departmental meetings.
CARRIED.
Motion: The Department delegate governance tasks and functions.
CARRIED.
Motion: The Department begin a strategic planning process.
CARRIED.
Motion: The Department consider developing a part-time faculty handbook.
CARRIED.
Motion: The Department develop internal procedures for the identification, screening, selection and evaluation of part time instructors.
CARRIED.
Motion: The department be proactive in its recruitment of new faculty members.
CARRIED.
Motion: The Department improve communication and co-operation with library staff.
CARRIED.
Motion: The Department appoint a library liaison.
CARRIED.
R. Myers abstained from all financial motions.
Motion: That more meeting and office space be made available for part-time instructors.
CARRIED.
Motion: Greater support be given to faculty research.
CARRIED.
Motion: That release time for the Chair of Criminology be increased from one half course to a full course.
WITHDRAWN.
Motion: That established faculty complement for the Department be made commensurate with other academic units at St. Thomas.
CARRIED.
Motion: Adequate contiguous space be provided to house the Department and other faculty activities as the faculty expands.
CARRIED.
Motion: The University increase secretarial support and other support services for the Department of Criminology.
CARRIED.
Motion: The library allocation formula be reviewed.
CARRIED.
