How to copy and paste a document into WordPerfect

We know that a lot of you have found useful information on the Internet, (in Netscape), that you would like to print out. Unfortunately, Netscape isn't very cooperative sometimes. It happens to the best of us... you end up with 8 pages instead of your expected two. And some pages in between are blank etc...etc.

What we are recommending to students is that you "copy and paste" the information from the web-page that you want to print into a word-processor, (ie. WordPerfect for Windows) and print the data as a WordPerfect file.

If you are uncertain of how to use "copy and paste" feature in Windows, and these instructions (below) do not help, don't hesitate to ask one of the computer lab staff, who are here to help you.

How to "copy and paste"

1. Selecting text

You're in the Netscape document you would like to have printed. Say, for example, it is a report on a book or film. It ranges from 2 to 6 paragraphs. All you have to do is click on the first letter of the first word you would like to print and drag the mouse downwards to the point where you no longer want to print. Now you should have a dark blue selection on the words. This means you have the desired text selected.

2. Copying the selected text

If you go to the top of the Netscape program (without clicking anywhere else in the web-page-- otherwise you will lose your selection) where it says "file" then "edit" "view" etc...etc...

Just click on the word "edit" and then choose the word "copy" and click on it. You have just copied the text you selected to a clipboard in the computer's memory.

(OR, Otherwise, there is another method of copying text with your keyboard, hold the control key (Ctrl) down and then hit the letter "c" key.--This is the keyboard way of copying the selected text.)

3. Minimizing Netscape

Now this is the most confusing part for most, but really once you are aware of it, it is very simple. There are three buttons on the very top right hand corner of the Netscape program's Window. They look like this:

The first button is called an underscore, you should select this button to minimize Netscape. This will make the Netscape program accessible from the bottom of your screen like this:

4. Now you are able to open WordPerfect from the icon on the desktop.

5. Pasting the selected text

Once you have opened WordPerfect, you should once again select the "Edit" option from the top of your screen, and click on paste. The selected text you have copied from Netscape should appear on your screen.

6. The format of the text may be slightly different. For example, words may run together, or you may have to change the spacing from single space, to double space. This will simply require you to go through the text and fix any formatting problems that may have occurred.

7. Printing the selected text

From here you may print the selected text by again, going to the top of your screen and select "File" and then "Print".

8. Having completed these steps, you have ensured that only the selected text will be printed, and not ten pages of unwanted information.
