Email FAQ's (STU Webmail):
Email Solutions:
How do I send an attachment with my email?
Log into your STU e-mail. Choose to ‘Compose’ a message. At the bottom of the compose screen you will see three boxes with a button marked ‘browse’ beside each one. Click the ‘browse’ button beside one of the boxes. Choose the drive where you saved your file. Make sure the field marked ‘files of type’ has the ‘All Files’ option selected. Then you will be able to view all of the files you have in that drive and select the one you want to attach. Choose ‘open’ once you’ve selected your file.
Note: You can only send one attachment per box, which means three attachments per e-mail. You’ll have to send another e-mail if you want to attachment more files.
How do I check my email or marks from home?
You will have to have internet access at home to do this. Open your web browser, like Netscape or Explorer, and go to the STU website www.stu.ca
To check your e-mail, just click on STU Email.
To check your marks, just click on Current Students. Once you’re on the current student’s page, click on Webadvisor Online for Students and follow the directions.
If you are logging on for the first time and don’t know your pin number, or if you forget your password, you’ll have to visit the computer lab with your student ID. We can’t give pin numbers out or reset passwords over the phone. Your alternative is to e-mail mywebpasswd@stu.ca and include in the e-mail your date of birth, SIN, and student number. They require all three pieces of information to ensure the security of your account.
How do I get rid of SPAM in my email account? To get rid of spam, you have to set up a Spam folder in your STU e-mail account. First sign into your e-mail, then click on MAILBOX - In the Create Mailbox line...type ‘spam’, all small letters. Then click Create Mailbox.
You should now have a folder marked ‘spam’ among your folders in your Mailbox. Click ‘Rules’. In the top WHITE box type ‘spam’ (again, all small letters), and click Add Rule. There should be a line with spam and ‘Edit’...click edit.
In the DATA box, set it to SUBJECT. OPERATION IS PARAMETER, type *= = = spam= = =* ACTION, type ~gxxxx/spam or choose DISCARD (to delete all spam)
Then click Update.
This should filter all spam away from your Inbox. You should check this folder about once a week to make sure there are no actual e-mails getting sent there. Also, be sure to delete everything in the folder about once a week!
Can I send an email by clicking on the address on a website?
By clicking on an address online, it will automatically open in Netscape mail. Although it looks like you may be able to send your e-mail this way, you can't. Students are set up only to use STU’s web based mail system, not Netscape mail. You will have to copy and paste the address into your STU e-mail account.
How do I forward my mail messages to another account
If you want to forward all your mail to an account other than your STU e-mail, such as hotmail or yahoo, the first step is to log into your STU mail account. Select the ‘Rules’ option from the top of the page and scroll down until you see ‘Redirect All Mail To:’.
Select the box beside this and unselect all three of the boxes along the bottom. Next, in the field below type which e-mail address you want your messages forwarded to in full (i.e. gxxxx@hotmail.com) Select ‘Update’ when you are finished.
How do I open an email attachment?
Normally you can open an e-mail attachment by single-clicking on the link in the e-mail. A box will come up asking you if you want to ‘save’ or ‘open’ the attachment, you can choose either of these options. If it’s a file that you want to save then you should select the ‘save’ option and then choose where you want to save it. After you have done this, open the directory where you saved the file and double click on the file and it should open.
If you choose to just open the attachment it should open automatically, you can still save the attachment using this option by selecting ‘file’ and ‘save’. If neither of the options work, see the help desk worker, the file type may not be compatible with the programs on our lab computers. The help desk worker will find out what the problem is and will be able to open it for you.
How do I log into my STU email account?
Log onto the internet and go to the St. Thomas website. On the green menu bar on the page, click on the option marked ‘STU Email’. On the next screen select whether you would like to check mail on the secure server or the unsecure server. The next screen will ask you for your user name and password. Your user name is the same one as your initial login user name. Your password, if you’re logging in for the first time, is your pin number. After you’ve logged in, you can change your password.
To change your password you have to be logged into your e-mail account. Click on the heading marked ‘Settings’. Scroll to the bottom of that page. Enter your old password, new password and reenter new password in the appropriate boxes. Then click the button marked ‘Modify’ and ‘Update’. Your e-mail password has been changed. For convenience sake, you should probably make your e-mail password the same as your login password, so that it’s easier to remember.
I forgot my email password, how do I get a new one?
The computer lab assistants are not allowed to give out pin numbers or change e-mail passwords over the phone. If you would like your password changed, you will have to come to the computer lab in person and present you student ID card to the help desk assistant.
Should you require your STU Webmail password to be changed please contact Kathy Buffett.
How do I change my email password?
If you are already signed into your STU account select the ‘settings’ option from the top of the page. Then click on the word ‘Password’ type your old password, your new password and your new password again and click ‘modify’.
How do I save a draft copy of my email?
After you have logged into your STU e-mail account, in the box where it says Create Mailbox type “DRAFTS” and click ‘create mailbox’. Next you must select the ‘settings’ option and in the box that says ‘Message Composer’ you will see another field on the right hand side that says ‘store drafts in:’ in this field select the mailbox you just created (‘drafts’). Finally click update, now when you compose a message you will be given the option to ‘save as draft’.
What do I do if my email account is full?
If, for some reason, it does appear to be full, you will have to sort through your e-mails and delete as many as you can. The computer lab, unfortunately, cannot give extra space to students. The same thing applies to F: drives and their capacities.
