St. Thomas announces 2002 - 2003 fees
[ Fredericton ] St. Thomas University's Board of Governors yesterday approved the budget for the 2002 - 2003 fiscal year and announced revisions to the University's fee levels.
For the 2002 - 2003 academic year, tuition fees for Arts will increase from $3,290 to $3,520, an increase of $230. The fees for Education and the post-baccalaureate in Social Work will increase by $300, bringing the tuition in these 11-month programs to $5,300 and $6,500.
"We have led the way in keeping our tuition fees at the very lowest level possible to protect students from increased costs," said St. Thomas University President Daniel O'Brien. "However, this new rate structure is the result of the financial pressures experienced by our institution. We must continue to maintain high quality programming and that demands an adjustment in fees. For example, our expenses related to computing services have increased substantially, and this increase will help us to keep pace with the technology expectations of our students. We are also responding to a critical need to add full-time faculty."
The President added that St. Thomas continues to be the only university in the Maritimes to include a health plan, valued at approximately $85, as part of its tuition fees. He noted that the tuition at St. Thomas University is still, by far, the lowest in the Maritime Provinces.
One out of two first-year students at St. Thomas receive some form of financial assistance in their first year of study. One out of five students receive a major, renewable award ranging in value from $15,000 to $40,000 over four years.
St. Thomas University will continue to offer a 10 per cent discount on tuition fees when two or more immediate family members are enrolled concurrently as full-time students of the university.
Residence fees will also increase by approximately 5 per cent. The cost of a double room with a base meal plan will increase from $4,430 to $4,650. A single room with a basic meal plan will increase from $5,430 to $5,700.
This rate provides for the addition of high-speed Internet access in each room in residence.
