St. Thomas University held a reception to celebrate the publication of two books by faculty members today.

John Coates is the author of “Ecology and Social Work: Toward a New Paradigm,” published by Fernwood Publishing. The publisher notes that Coates “critiques the assumptions, values and beliefs of the dominant world view which supports most economic and social activity. He reviews and critiques social work’s major theoretical frameworks and introduces and articulates a new world view, which provides a solid theoretical foundation for both social work education and a professional practice.”

The Publisher notes that, “The first Canadian Edition of Statistical Techniques in Business and Economics gives students the most well-rounded learning tool possible–from the foundation to the application of statistics. The goal of this text is to present the concepts and usage of statistical techniques accurately and in a language within the reach of all students–a treatment that uncovers the history of statistics, clearly and firmly explains their concepts and techniques, and explores their applications in business and in life.”

In particular, “Students will learn not only the operation of the statistical concepts but also why they are relevant and how they are manifested....Real life examples from Canadian and international business permeate the text, and students can apply their understanding of statistics through real world data filling the exercises, case studies, and reviews....Further, Students are introduced to the pioneers of statistical concepts–from ancient antiquity to modern times–a foundation created to ground students’ understanding and to motivate their learning.” Satya Dev Gupta co-authored “Statistical Techniques in Business and Economics,” published by McGraw-Hill Ryerson. The publisher notes that, “The first Canadian Edition of Statistical Techniques in Business and Economics gives students the most well-rounded learning tool possible – from the foundation to the application of statistics.
