St. Thomas University Awarded Canada Research
Chair
Fredericton – St. Thomas University Professor
Dr. Deborah van den Hoonaard has been named a Canada Research Chair
in an announcement made at the university today.
The Hon. Andy Scott, Fredericton MP and Regional Minister for New
Brunswick, was joined by St. Thomas University President and Vice
Chancellor Dr. Daniel O’Brien in making the five-year $500,000
funding announcement. As a Canada Research Chair, Dr. van den Hoonard
will conduct research on social policy issues related to gerontology
and immigration as well as take a leading role in probing and extending
understanding of qualitative research and analysis in advancing social
science research.
“Knowledge, research and innovation are at the heart of our
country’s prosperity,” said Minister Scott. “By
attracting research talent to our world-class institutions, Canada
is firmly establishing its position at the forefront of the global
economy.”
Dr. O’Brien noted that this is the first Canada Research Chair
awarded at St. Thomas and it reflects both an institutional and personal
achievement. For a Canada Research Chair, a nominee’s work must
align with the university’s strategic research plan and must
meet the high standards of the national program.
“Dr. van den Hoonaard has a very productive and successful
research career and is well respected by her peers,” he said.
“In addition to our reputation as a noted undergraduate teaching
university, this research chair reinforces our commitment and interest
as a university in supporting faculty research and scholarship.”
This funding is part of a $99-million investment to support 106 new
Canada Research Chairs at 34 universities across Canada. Of the new
chairs, 53 are either expatriates returning to Canada or researchers
coming to Canada from abroad. So far, the program has attracted 442
researchers from other countries.
