Friends of Margaret McCain Committee
Established to Guide “Building for the Future Campaign”

Fredericton – Political, business and community leaders from across Canada, all friends and associates of Margaret McCain, have formed a committee to guide fundraising for the new Margaret Norrie McCain Hall at St. Thomas University.

Earlier this year, St. Thomas University announced that its new academic building will be named Margaret Norrie McCain Hall in recognition of Mrs. McCain’s outstanding public service to New Brunswick, her focus on education and her active support for artistic and philanthropic causes. “As the first woman to be Lieutenant Governor in New Brunswick and with her life-long commitment to public service, Mrs. McCain is an outstanding role model for our students,” said Dr. Daniel O’Brien, President and Vice Chancellor.

The committee will be co-chaired by Sharon Carstairs, Senate of Canada (Manitoba) and Belinda Stronach, Member of Parliament (Newmarket-Aurora). Senator Noel Kinsella (New Brunswick) will serve as secretary for the committee which is comprised of:

  • Catherine Callbeck, Senate of Canada (Prince Edward Island)
  • Erminie Cohen, Saint John, NB
  • Catherine A. Delaney, President, C.A. Delaney Capital Management, Toronto, ON
  • Margot A. Franssen, President, Bibelot Inc., Toronto, ON
  • Ruth Goldbloom, Halifax, NS
  • Aldéa Landry, President, Landal Inc., Moncton, NB
  • Julie McKenna, Washington, DC, USA
  • Margaret Newall, Newall & Associates, Calgary, AB
  • Vivienne Poy, Senate of Canada (Ontario)
  • Marilyn Trenholme Counsell, Senate of Canada (New Brunswick)

The need for a new academic building at St. Thomas University reflects growth in enrolment over the past several years and continued emphasis on a quality learning environment. The 37,000 square foot building will provide additional classrooms, a student study hall, research and project rooms, and faculty offices. Construction of the $8 million building will begin in summer 2005 and is expected to be available for students and faculty by 2006.
