Students win award at Model UN

Three students from St. Thomas University returned to Fredericton recently with individual awards from the Harvard Model United Nations. The Harvard Model UN is the world’s best university-level UN simulation and attracts teams from the most prestigious universities.

The sixteen member St. Thomas team was preparedw by Political Science Professor Dr. Joseph Masciulli. Team members were assigned to play the role of Ethiopia.

Chris Bourne of Fredericton won the prize for best delegate on the committee discussing development issues. Kelly McLaughlin and Irenia Davis received an honourable mention for their excellent performance on the human rights committee. Committees include student representatives for approximately 150 countries.

This year’s team continues a tradition of excellence. In 1999, the St. Thomas team won the prize for top delegation, along with a number of individual awards, at the North American Model United Nations in Toronto.

Each Spring, St. Thomas also hosts Canada’s finest UN simulation for high school students, the John Peters Model United Nations.
