Springtime for most students means cramming for exams and hunting for a summer job. But in April, students at St. Thomas University pitched in to help the hungry in a Clear the Shelves campaign. The programme targets off campus students who are leaving their homes for the summer and have non-perishable food items they don’t want to move back home. The groceries were collected from fellow students and local residents at the end of the academic year and donated to elementary schools, food banks and soup kitchens.

During the course of the campaign St. Thomas students generated a whopping 6000 lbs. of food. That’s enough food to provide three-day emergency food hampers to 2,400 people.

Clear the Shelves was sponsored by St. Thomas University and the Alumni Association. It is one of three Meal Exchange initiatives St. Thomas University participated in this year. Meal Exchange operates on 22 campuses across Canada, where it encourages students to help the hungry.
St. Thomas students also fed 140 elementary school children at the Montgomery Street School and told them how they can help the hungry in their community.
