Co-Winners of Excellence in Teaching Award


Dr. Dev GuptaDr. Andrea ShutzThe St. Thomas University Excellence in Teaching Award this year had co-winners for the first time since its inception in 1996. Andrea Schutz and Dev Gupta share the annual award for the 2000-2001 academic year.

Following the faculty and staff “Welcome Back to Campus” lunch on August 29, Dr. Schutz and Dr. Gupta’s pictures were unveiled in the foyer of Edmund Casey Hall.

The Excellence in Teaching Award is granted to a professor(s) who demonstrates true excellence in teaching through classroom instruction, research, scholarship and community service.

Dr. Gupta received his BA from India’s Gujarat University, an MA from the University of Delhi, and an MA and a Ph.D. from McMaster. He has been teaching economics at St. Thomas since 1985.

He won a Special Merit Award in 1998, and the Students’ Union Excellence in Teaching award in 2000, which is determined by a student vote. Dr. Gupta’s major fields of research are Globalization and Development, and Econometric Modeling and Policy Analysis.

Dr. Schutz attended Brock for her BA, and the University of Toronto for her MA and Ph.D. She was honoured with the Students’ Union Excellence in Teaching award in 2001. Dr. Schutz has been teaching English at St. Thomas since 1996.

Nominations for the Excellence in Teaching Award are made by students or colleagues. Winners are decided by the Excellence in Teaching Award Committee.
