Dr. Rachlis in Fredericton - May 2008

(Scroll down to access audio & powerpoint of the entire May 12 Workshop)

The Fredericton Rachlis Group and the Third Age Centre joined forces in late 2007 to bring Dr. Michael Rachlis, physician, author, and one of Canada leading health policy analysts to Fredericton. Dr. Rachlis was here to present his ideas on how innovation is saving the Canadian health care system. An afternoon workshop for seniors was held on May 12 and a lecture for the general public was held the following evening. Dr. Rachlis was the keynote speaker at both of these well attended events. Dr. Rachlis also met with a variety of health professionals, in small groups for an exchange of information and ideas for developing efficiencies in delivering health services. He toured the Brunswick Street Community Health Centre, and the Gibson Street Clinic and held exchanges with staff in those centres. Finally he met with Bronwyn Davies, Director of Primary Health Care for New Brunswick and a group of policy planners in that Department. Members of the Rachlis Group and The Third Age Centre were in attendance and established a dialogue with the Department.

A number of copies of Dr. Rachlis’s most recent book Prescription for Excellence: How Innovation is Saving Canada’s Health Care System have been donated by him and the sponsoring groups to public libraries in the area. We wish to thank all who participated in events during Dr. Rachlis’s visit; the sponsors who graciously gave of their time and money to help us achieve our goals; and The Daily Gleaner, CBC, CTV, and KHJ Radio for their excellent coverage.

We particularly wish to thank the Adult Learning Knowledge Centre for the major grant they provided. The ALKC is an initiative of the Canadian Council on Learning, a national, non-profit, independent organization committed to improving learning for all Canadians. This funding was the impetus that got our project off the ground. Other sponsors included Scotiabank, ScotiaMcLeod, York Credit Union, TD Canada Trust, NB Women Issues Branch, UNB Faculty of Nursing, Department of Psychology and Applied Health Services Research Program and St Thomas University, Department of Gerontology.
