RESEARCH NEWSLETTER JANUARY 7th 2004
WEB SITES
Please note: The Research and the Faculty Development sites have been
split. I will not be maintaining the "faculty development"
site but I have left the links on "teaching", "university
service" and "career progress". Please check the research
site for information about internal and external funding opportunities
and past reports and newsletters.
RESEARCH COMMITTEE
Ian Fraser will be chairing and we will meet every second week. Please
let Ian know if you would like to add anything to the agenda.
SSHRC
1. SSHRC Transformation
SSHRC is consulting with universities about its "transformation"
process from a "funding council to a knowledge council". There
will be an opportunity for feedback to SSHRC from our community during
this process. I will be representing us at meetings in Toronto at the
end of the month and will let you know what transpires.
2. RDI Programme
The RDI fund is the fund for researchers who have a research focus but
are not far enough along to submit a Standard Research Grant application.
The next deadline for RDI applications is 7th April. Please e-mail if
you are thinking about submitting an application in this competition.
I will be holding an information session at 9.00am on Monday January
19th in my office.

3. Initiative on the New Economy Programme
This is a new programme with HRSD (Human Resources Skills Development)
and IC (Industry Canada) that seeks to "promote and support policy-relevant
empirical research on issues related to skills and to highly qualified
personnel." The first competition has 2 themes
1. Labour market implications of an aging workforce
2. Employer-supported training

4. Aid to Small Universities
The next competition deadline is December 2004. We can get up to $30,000
a year for three years. The Research Committee will be discussing what
we should apply for during the next few months. If you have ideas please
let me know.

CIHR GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS
CIHR have introduced a Graduate Scholarships programme similar to SSHRCs
programme. STU has been awarded one scholarship. The deadline for us
to submit our nomination is
March 1st but we will be having an earlier internal deadline. Full details
will be announced shortly. More information can be obtained from Larry
Batt at x323 or batt@stu.
CAMPUS RESEARCH NETWORK
This is set up on the ground floor of BMH. We will be announcing another
informationmailto:lbatt@stu.ca soon.
RESEARCH REFERENCE LIBRARY - BOOK PURCHASES
During the next few years we will be establishing a small research reference
library funded from part of our Indirect Costs grant. Please let me
have ideas about what we should purchase.
RESEARCH CONVERSATIONS
I am delighted about the initiative to hold faculty research conversations
and I hope that they will be well-attended. The first of the series
will be held in the Faculty Lounge at 3pm on Friday 9th.
