CONFERENCE OPPORTUNITIES

  • Big Lessons from Small Places: A Forum on Governance in Rural North America and the North Atlantic Rim – October 13-15, 2005, Twillingate, Newfoundland. Rural areas, small islands and other peripheral jurisdictions face unique challenges and opportunities in an increasingly global economy. In these changing social, economic and political environments, governance tools are critical for local and jurisdictional development.   • Gender and Medieval Studies Conference 2006 - This conference seeks to explore the relationship between Gender, Ecstasy and Identity within the medieval context. An invitation for proposals for papers of 20 minutes that approach how feelings of ecstasy create, disrupt or transform notions of medieval gender and identity. Abstracts of 250 words that demonstrate both a critical engagement with current gender debates in medieval studies and an examination of any aspect of the intersection between gender, ecstasy and identity are welcome.   • The 2nd Annual Conference on Diversity and Wellbeing: Promising Directions in Research, Policy and Practice - Submissions should be related to Diversity and Wellbeing in Research, Policy and Practice with a particular emphasis on practical applications. The Calgary Health Region defines diversity as all the ways we are unique and different from others.   • This information is from the International Educators Association of Canada:
    This note is to inform you about the launch of a new professional association of individuals dedicated to international education in Canada. The International Educators Association of Canada has formally come into being and is planning the first association meeting in Kingston in June. The association is comprised of individual members who have an affinity for international education. They may be currently employed in the field, may have been involved in international education in the past or may simply have a strong interest in the field. IEAC has launched a web site. They can be found at www.ieac.ca.
  • Marc Renaud who has been the President of SSHRC for the last 8 years has resigned. The "Transformation Exercises" are complete and SSHRC has announced new strategic directions: "clustering research; mobilizing knowledge; connecting Canadian research to the world; creating new research tools. "Further study has been commissioned on the following
    directions: a “continuum of support” to provide scholars with flexible funding throughout their careers; the role of, and delivery mechanisms for, research time stipends; and an international strategy for SSHRC.
