  • Carter G. Woodson Institute of Predoctoral Research - Fellowships. The Carter G. Woodson Institute for African-American and African Studies at the University of Virginia invites scholars whose work focuses on Africa and/or African Diaspora to apply for a two-year predoctoral research fellowship, beginning August 15, 2005. This residential fellowship carries an annual stipend of $20,000. Applications must be postmarked by December 3, 2004.   • “The First International Congress of Qualitative Inquiry” - University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, from May 5-7, 2005.   • Call for Papers: “The Figure of the Coquette” - The proposed collection of essays seeks to explore the figure of the coquette in the long eighteenth century (1660-1830), and has a particular interest in the coquette as a key site for debates about women’s nature and female roles during this period.
