STU
DRAFT STRATEGIC RESEARCH PLAN AND SUMMARY
I’ll
be very grateful if you could check the following site and give feedback
on the two drafts.
http://www.stu.ca/research/Research/index.htm.
The drafts are open for feedback from the community until November 7th.
Thanks for those of you who have already given feedback. I appreciate
the time that you have taken to do so. The Strategic Research Plan and
summary will accompany the application for a Canada Chair that we will
be making in December.
GRADUATE
SCHOLARSHIPS
We recommend 2
of our graduating students for $17,500 scholarships to pursue Master’s
research-based programmes for one year at a Canadian University of their
choice. Please remind your students that the Grad Students Committee
will be holding a “blue pencil café” between 9 and
10 am on Monday November 17th . Members of the committee will be available
to review student applications and make suggestions about how to strengthen
them. Do remind students to get on with putting together the application
right away. The deadline for them to submit applications to Departmental
Chairs is December 1st, and the deadline for departments to submit the
applications with departmental evaluations to my office is December
15th. Students will need mentoring as they complete these applications.
If you need another copy of the information sheet please let me know
if your departmental secretary has run out.
I have fliers for a Master’s
Fellowship at McGill valued at $12,000 and funded by Banque Nationale.
There is also a scholarship for $15,000 at McGill called the “Warren
Fellowship”.
Information about both of these opportunities can be found on
http://www.misc-iecm.mcgill.ca.
TEACHING
AND LEARNING
ATLANTIC
TEACHING SHOWCASE
Several of us went to Cape Breton for the annual “Teaching Showcase”
one day conference on 25th October. There are always interesting short
presentations that give good ideas about teaching and learning possibilities.
Consider going next year. It will be at Dal. Conference papers are peer
reviewed for conference proceedings
CLASSROOM
RELATIONSHIPS
Congratulations to the LTD committee for arranging sessions on another
very important issue. Several people have spoken to me about difficult
classroom relationships so this session should be interesting to several
people. According to the message from the LTD office , the sessions
begin at 9.00 in BMH 202 on 1st and 8th ,November

I expect them to be posted daily. The programme description is on line
