Theatre Reviews
Note: During 2006-7 a substantial number of local productions I saw
and liked did not get reviewed; since then, I've almost stopped reviewing.
One problem, a continuing one, was that my increasing deafness made it
difficult or impossible for me to know whether actors had difficulties
with projection, or whether it was my hearing. I have since realized that
an additional part of the difficulty for me was that many of the cast and
crews of local shows were counting on the reviews as "verdicts" on the
production, or as seals of approval (or the opposite). I have not thought
of my reviews as providing primarily evaluations, as I do not believe I
have the authority to offer categorical judgments. My intention was to
offer food for thought, to provoke reflection and discussion of plays.
When I have indulged in evaluation, it has been, at least in intention,
in the service of thinking about why things are the way they are, and inviting
others to think about that too. So I have discontinued trying to review
most local productions here. I have, however, continued to review occasionally
and offer reflections on theatre productions.
Below, however, are a few theatrical reviews and comments since the
fall of 2007 -- and here is a link to a
page with all my reviews from between 1995 and 2006.
