Research

Dr. Gupta’s research interests are in applied econometrics, international trade, economics of globalization, and more recently, in the field of economics of happiness. Dr. Gupta has published six books. His Ph.D. dissertation, Market Structure and Econometric Modeling: A Case Study of the World Zinc Industry, was published as a book, The World Zinc Industry. He has co-authored a textbook on Statistics, Statistical Techniques in Business and Economics, which has also been adapted in French. He has published (edited) four volumes in the field of globalization and development, entitled Globalization, Growth, and SustainabilityDynamics of Globalization and DevelopmentPolitical Economy of Globalization, and Globalization and the Dilemmas of the State in the South (Co-editor with Adams and Mengisteab).  He has also published several chapters in books and articles in refereed journals.

 

Dr. Dev Gupta’s research interests in the recent past have been in the areas of international economics, economics of spirituality and the economics of happiness. Recently, Dr. Gupta has published a paper entitled “Comparative Advantage and Competitive Advantage: An Economics Perspective and a Synthesis” as a lead article in the inaugural issue of Athens Journal of Business and Economics (January 2015).  This paper presents a critique of Michael Porter’s theory of competitive advantage and builds a unified model of the popular theory of comparative advantage in economics and Porter’s theory of competitive advantage in business. The proposed model has been applied to diverse fields including an analysis of the European integration of Turkey, developing models of tourism, an economic analysis of a number of international commodity markets, and an analysis of innovation, technology and knowledge management.

 

Dr. Gupta has supervised a number of students working on their dissertations for PhD, MA, and Honours degrees on a wide variety of topics. He has also served as external reviewer for a number of MA and PhD dissertations. He has helped to organize and participated in a number of national and international conferences, including a number of keynote and inaugural speeches at these conferences. He has also served as a member on the editorial board and as a reviewer for a number of academic journals.

 

Dr. Gupta is currently engaged in research on economics of happiness. He is working towards developing a model of happiness where he plans to include most of the forces influencing body, mind, and spirit, and their interconnections in maximizing happiness. He is also developing a 2000/3000 level course on economics of happiness that he plans to offer at STU in the near future.
