Tenure Track Position – Assistant Professor of Primary Literacy Education
The School of Education, St. Thomas University, invites applications for a tenure-track appointment in Primary Literacy Education/Literacy Foundations/Reading Methodology at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin July 1, 2019, pending budgetary approval.
St. Thomas University is an undergraduate, liberal arts institution with an approximate fulltime enrolment of 2000. Its students graduate with Bachelor of Arts, Applied Arts, Education, and Social Work degrees. The faculty members are distinguished teachers, researchers and scholars, and the university holds two Canada Research Chairs.
The School of Education seeks candidates willing to contribute to teaching, program development, and student advisement in the teacher education program as well as participation in University service activities. The successful candidate will teach courses in elementary literacy, language acquisition, and reading development. Knowledge and/or expertise in literacy interventions, classroom-based assessment, and exceptional learner education are preferred qualities. Each of the successful candidates will demonstrate excellence as a teacher and advisor and provide evidence of an active research program.
Applicants must have a strong commitment to practice-based, social justice-oriented teacher education and to building partnerships with public schools or community-based organizations. Faculty in the School of Education also teach a core course as part of a full teaching load. Any of the following courses would be preferred teaching areas - Educational Technology, School Law & Ethics, Educational Psychology, Exceptional Learners & Differentiated Instruction, Classroom Management, or Assessment Practices.
Requirements include a PhD (or imminent completion), a Bachelor of Education, and teacher certification. Successful candidates must have school-based classroom teaching experience in primary literacy and early intervention strategies. Preference will be given to individuals with a minimum of three years successful teaching and research experience in reading at the elementary school level, especially those who have experience with exceptional learners and/or culturally and linguistically diverse student populations. Teaching experience at the university level is also preferred.

The application must also include a curriculum vitae and a teaching dossier that provides evidence of teaching effectiveness, such as sample course syllabi, teaching evaluations, and a statement of teaching philosophy.
