Black Box Theatre
Sir James Dunn Hall
Winter’s Tales, a new play about men who curl and play hockey into old age, will be playing at St. Thomas University’s Black Box Theatre in Sir James Dunn Hall on Saturday, April 13 at 7:30 PM and Sunday, April 14 at 1:30 PM. Admission to this 60-minute performance is free, and each performance will include a post-show talkback with the cast.
The play is written by Drs. Stephanie Dotto, a postdoctoral fellow at St. Thomas, and Kristi Allain, Canada Research Chair of Physical Culture and Social Life and professor of sociology at St. Thomas. It was directed by Dotto and based on Allain’s research interviews with over 40 older men who still curl or play hockey. Starring an intergenerational cast of community members and students, this performance showcases the agonies and ecstasies of lifetimes spent in winter sport. From childhood memories of pond hockey and jam-can curling to reflections on team camaraderie, on-ice violence, illness, sexism, and death, Winter’s Tales explores what it means to grow old in one’s sport.
