Fourth-year STUdent Lauren Sturgeon put her passion for reading and writing into practice by supporting young learners through an internship with the Learning Disability Association of New Brunswick.

“My internship gave me the chance to apply what I learn in my classes in a meaningful setting,” said Sturgeon, who is completing Honours in English Language and Literature.

In her role, Sturgeon supported several initiatives, including tutoring children aged seven to sixteen, developing lesson plans for a creative writing workshop, and creating and curating social media content for the organization.

One of the most meaningful aspects of the experience was working directly with students.

“The highlight of my internship experience was being able to build meaningful relationships with my students and foster a love for reading and writing, just as my own teachers did for me,” she said.

Transferable Skills

Sturgeon said her education at STU prepared her well for the internship.

“My background in English was very helpful in many capacities during my internship,” she said.

“I learned to communicate effectively, think critically, and be an effective writer, all of which led to my success in the position.”

Sturgeon encouraged other STUdents to consider the STU Internship Program.

“I would absolutely recommend the internship program, as it provides valuable work experience and opportunities,” she said.

The support she received through the Office of Experiential Learning and Career Development allowed her to refine several important professional skills.

“Overall, my experience with both the office and the organization was very positive, and I cannot recommend enough that other STU students take advantage of this wonderful program.”
