Dr. McFarland grew up in Victoria, BC where she received an Honours BA in Economics. She did a MA and PhD in Economics at McGill University in Montreal. She has spent her whole academic career at St. Thomas University doing teaching, research and university and community service. Her teaching areas include Political Economy of Women, Women in the Third World, International Development, Community Economic Development, New Brunswick Economy and Marxian Economics. Her research has involved projects on women in the economy, the New Brunswick economy, call centres, microcredit and work in the era of climate change.
