"I Have Already Experienced So Much” - Miranda Furlong on the First Half of her Exchange in Sweden

Miranda Furlong always dreamed of seeing the world.

“One of the main reasons I decided to study at St. Thomas University was because I knew it offered amazing study abroad and exchange programs,” she said.

The fourth-year STU student is currently studying at the Ӧrebro University in Sweden as part of a full-year international exchange.

Furlong, who is majoring in Sociology and Women’s Studies and Gender Studies, said although adjusting to the education system in Sweden has been challenging, she’s enjoying her time in the classroom.

“Classes have been enriching so far,” she said. “It’s so interesting to learn about gender and women’s issues that are specific to Sweden and comparing them to issues that Canada is currently facing.”

Furlong has participated in travel-study courses to Ireland and Japan during intersession in previous years but wanted to participate in a full-year exchange before graduation.

Travelling from Fredericton, NB, to Ӧrebro, Sweden, was a large step outside of her comfort zone, but she said she knew the experience would be valuable.

“Going for one or two semesters abroad is life changing. You grow academically and internally as a person,” she said.

“It may sound corny, but the highlight of my exchange so far has been meeting so many amazing new friends from all around the world. We’re all navigating through this new adventure together, and it makes my exchange so much more exciting.”

Although she’s only halfway through her exchange, she said she’s already experienced so much.

“I have made so many new friends from all around the globe, and they feel almost like a second family. I’ve had a great time both inside and outside of the classroom.”

Furlong is excited for her second semester and plans to travel and do some sightseeing.

“Students should consider participating in an exchange because it’s truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”

The deadline to apply for an international exchange is February 15.
