Department of Criminology
Bsc (Guelph), MA, MEd, and PhD (UofT)

Dr. Susan Reid is being honoured for her outstanding contributions to St. Thomas University and the wider community. A professor in the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice, Dr. Reid holds a BASc from Guelph, and an MA, MEd, and PhD from the University of Toronto. She has devoted much of her career to the well-being of youth in New Brunswick. She is the Director of the Centre for Research on Youth at Risk and co-leads Youth Matters, which offers programs for incarcerated youth. She is a longstanding member with the John Howard Society of New Brunswick, a member of the New Brunswick Harm Prevention roundtable, a founding board member of Champions for New Brunswick Children, and a recent inductee to the New Brunswick Crime Prevention Hall of Fame. In addition to her academic books and articles, she has authored a number of technical reports and briefs on public policy issues related to her specialization. Her commitment to youth has an impact in her classroom as she provides opportunities for her students to conduct social action projects. Her students collected books for incarcerated youth in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, they collected mittens for Fredericton children through STUMitts, and participated in youth homelessness fundraisers in Fredericton for the “Coldest Night of the Year” and nationally with “Push for Change.” Unique student engagement activities on campus for #BellLetsTalk Day raised awareness of mental illness. This winter, she launched a pilot study with senior students to create an educational partnership between St. Thomas University and the Fredericton Police Force.
