Canada Research Chair in Indigenous Studies

St. Thomas University invites applications for a tenure-track appointment in the Department of Native Studies. The successful candidate will be nominated for a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Indigenous Studies. This tenure-track appointment will begin on July 1, 2021, subject to budgetary approval.

St. Thomas University is an undergraduate, liberal arts institution with a full-time enrolment of 1,900. Its students graduate with Bachelor of Arts, Applied Arts, Education, and Social Work degrees.

The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. or equivalent in Indigenous studies or a related field and a strong research and teaching record commensurate with their career stage.

The Department of Native Studies has three intersecting areas of focus: (1) Indigenous socio-political and economic structures and the impact of western ideologies/capitalism on traditional social organization and values; (2) the historical-materialist study of the pre-contact and post-contact past of First Nations, with an emphasis on the historiographical contributions of archaeology, cartography, oral history, and ethnohistory; and (3) Indigenous legal studies, with an emphasis on Native systems of law, the legal-political relationship between Native peoples and Europeans, Aboriginal rights and the legal struggles of Indigenous groups. The University’s priority is for a scholar who specializes in the area of Indigenous legal studies in North America, preferably from a historical-materialist perspective. The ability to teach courses such as “Native People and the Law”, “‘Human’ and ‘Aboriginal’ Rights”, “Aboriginal Peoples and International Law”, and “Aboriginal Rights: The Land Question” would be an asset.

Completed applications must include a letter of application, a curriculum vitae, a research portfolio including a (maximum 1000-word) research plan for the initial 5-year term of the CRC appointment, and a teaching dossier. Applicants must also arrange to have three letters of reference sent directly to Dr. Kim Fenwick, Vice-President (Academic & Research), St. Thomas University, 51 Dineen Drive, Fredericton, NB, E3B 5G3. Electronic applications may be sent to vpacademic@stu.ca.

Nominees for Tier 2 CRC positions must be exceptional emerging researchers (defined by the CRC program as having received their highest academic degree within the past 10 years). However, nominating institutions may nominate researchers who are more than 10 years from their highest degree at the time of nomination who have experienced legitimate career interruptions. The CRC program recognizes the legitimate impact that leaves (e.g., maternity leave, leave due to illness) can have on a candidate’s record of research achievement and will ensure that these leaves will be taken into careful consideration during the assessment process. Please ensure that such leaves are highlighted in your application package. Please see the following link for details on the Tier 2 justification process.

An equal employment employer, St. Thomas University is committed to employment equity for women, Aboriginal persons, members of visible minority groups, and persons with disabilities. All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadian citizens and permanent residents will be given priority. Preference will be given to Indigenous applicants. Indigenous candidates who wish to qualify for such preferential consideration must self-identify in their cover letter.

Accommodations are available for applicants throughout the recruitment process. If you require accommodations, please contact Jason Scarbro, Director of Human Resources, at jscarbro@stu.ca; 506-452-0630.
